Why IPE Needs Specialist Care

The #1 Mistake With IPE Decks

IPE is so dense that standard deck stains can't penetrate the wood surface. Most painters don't know this β€” they apply a regular stain, it sits on top of the wood, peels within a season, and the homeowner thinks the deck was treated. It wasn't. It was just coated.

IPE requires penetrating oils specifically formulated for high-density tropical hardwoods. These oils soak into the wood rather than sitting on top β€” providing UV protection, moisture resistance, and color restoration that actually lasts. That's what we use, and it's all we use on IPE.

Common IPE Mistakes

What Other Contractors Get Wrong With IPE

We've seen these mistakes on dozens of IPE decks across the northwest suburbs. They're all avoidable with the right knowledge.

❌
Using Regular Deck Stain
Standard stains can't penetrate IPE's dense surface. They film over the top, look fine for a few months, then peel and bubble β€” leaving you worse off than before.
❌
Power Washing Too Aggressively
IPE doesn't need the same pressure as pine or cedar. Over-aggressive power washing raises the grain and damages the surface β€” making it harder to treat properly afterward.
❌
Skipping the Cleaning Step
Applying oil to an IPE deck that hasn't been properly cleaned first means the oil bonds to dirt and mill glaze instead of the wood. The result looks patchy and doesn't protect properly.
❌
Applying Too Much Oil
IPE can only absorb so much oil at once. Applying too many coats before the previous coat has absorbed causes a gummy, sticky surface that attracts dirt and doesn't dry properly.
❌
Treating Silver Gray as "Damage"
Silver-gray IPE isn't damaged β€” it's just weathered. The wood beneath is usually perfectly sound and can be fully restored to its natural chocolate-brown color with the right process.

The Right Way: IPE-Specific Oils
We use penetrating oils formulated specifically for high-density tropical hardwoods like IPE. They soak in, protect from within, and restore color that stays β€” not a surface film that peels.

Customer Reviews

What IPE Deck Owners Are Saying

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

"Our IPE deck had gone completely silver-gray over two seasons. I called three contractors β€” two of them quoted a standard deck stain and didn't even mention it was IPE. PerfectDecks came out, explained exactly why IPE needs penetrating oil and not stain, and the result was incredible. Rich brown color completely restored."

"I have a 600 sq ft IPE deck that another company treated three years ago with a regular stain. It peeled within one season and looked terrible. PerfectDecks stripped the failed coating, properly cleaned the IPE, and applied the right penetrating oil. Night and day difference. Will only trust them with it going forward."

"The level of knowledge they brought to the IPE restoration was impressive. They explained every step, used the right products, and took their time with the oil application instead of rushing. The deck looks better now than when it was installed. Worth every penny on wood this expensive."

IPE FAQ

IPE Restoration Questions Answered

Can a completely gray IPE deck be restored? β–Ό
In most cases, yes. Silver-gray IPE is not damaged β€” it's just weathered. The gray color comes from UV oxidation on the surface, not structural damage. With the right cleaning and penetrating oil process, the natural chocolate-brown color can typically be fully restored, even after years of weathering.
Why can't I use regular deck stain on IPE? β–Ό
IPE is so dense β€” with a Janka hardness rating of 3680 β€” that standard deck stains cannot penetrate the wood surface. They film over the top, look okay initially, and then peel within one season because there's no bond with the wood itself. IPE requires penetrating oils specifically formulated for high-density tropical hardwoods.
How often does IPE need to be treated? β–Ό
Generally every 1–2 years with a penetrating oil treatment to maintain color and protection. IPE that has gone fully gray may require a more intensive cleaning and restoration process first. We'll give you a specific maintenance schedule recommendation after your first restoration.
My IPE deck has cracks β€” is that normal? β–Ό
Surface checking (small surface cracks) is normal in IPE and doesn't indicate structural failure. This is caused by the rapid expansion and contraction of a very dense, dry wood. Deep or wide cracks that go through the board may indicate a more serious issue β€” worth having inspected in person.
Can you replace individual IPE boards if some are damaged? β–Ό
At this time we do not provide IPE board replacement services. Our work is focused on cleaning, restoration, and oiling of existing hardwood decks. If replacement boards are required, we recommend having them installed before the restoration process so we can properly clean and treat the entire surface afterward for the best overall appearance.
